Major life milestones often have a major tax impact. Changes in your marital status, having a baby or adopting a child can have significant impact on your taxes. This is the place to ask questions about dependents, real estate, and other various scenarios that play a significant role in what taxes you pay.

divorced but living with ex spouse

I have been divorced since 2008.  At the end of 2016 my ex-wife and minor son moved back into my house.  I pay all house expenses and the home is in my name.

For the 2017 tax filing should we both file as single?  My ex-wife has always claimed our son as a dependent.  Can she file as head of household and I file as single?

I want to make sure we are filing correctly as I don't think a joint filing status is correct.

Re: divorced but living with ex spouse

Since you are paying all the house expenses I really doubt your wife is providing most of your son's support.  You both should

be filing as single.  If anyone is head of household, it is you.
