Healthcare ECN Number

In January 2017, I received a healthcare exemption from the marketplace due to my low income. I'm filing out my taxes for 2017 and when it came to entering my ECN number, it said to enter the 7-digit code. However, the code I have is only 6 digits. I'm confused about what to do. Should I just enter the 6 digit code or do I need to get a new ECN code?

Re: Healthcare ECN Number

Hello and welcome to the community.

These exemptions are good for only the year for which you apply. You would need to get a new exemption, and a new ECN code for this tax year.

Hope this helps you out

The 6-digit code was for the 2017 year.

Re: Healthcare ECN Number

The exemption codes are issued for an exemption on your entire income for the year in question. The code issued in January 2017 would have been for 2016. Once you have your entire income for 2017, including all of December, you can apply for an exemption for the 2017 year. Also the codes do change in length.

Re: Healthcare ECN Number

Roger,
I think you're wrong on this one.  You can apply for an affordability exemption and get a number at the beginning of the year for that year.  If you wait until it's time to file your taxes, you don't get a number assigned, you just claim the exemption on your tax return-- you never get a number.

Pinkgirl01,

Have you tried entering the 6 digits, and did it work?  If it does, then you're good to go. Smiley Very Happy

Re: Healthcare ECN Number

Hi Pinkgirl01, After looking at this thread I have been asked to step in and clarify some things for you. First it appears that a valid ECN may have 6 numbers so you would use the ECN you received on Form 8965.

As for the other responses you have received, the affordability exemptions granted by the marketplace are granted based on projected income for the year, so an exemption granted in January 2017 would be good for the months of January through December of 2017. There is a similar exemption that may be claimed at the end of the year using actual income, but it does not require the marketplace application and will be claimed in Part III of the Form 8965.

I hope this helps clear things up!

Re: Healthcare ECN Number

Hello pinkgirl01!

Welcome to The H&R Block Community!

If your ECN is for the 2017 tax year, you should be fine to continue with your tax return using that 6-digit code. Generally, you apply for marketplace exemptions prior to the months in which you need it, so I would expect this ECN to be for the 2017 tax year. If it is actually for the 2016 tax year, you can follow the steps in H&R Block's software to see if you qualify for any exemption for 2017. The program may then suggest you apply for an exemption via the marketplace and then ask you to list that you have a pending marketplace exemption on your tax return.

If you have any further questions, I'll be happy to help!
