Emerald Card declined

I'm not even sure if this is the correct place for this, as it's so arduous and annoying to try to talk to someone at H&R Block as there is no chat feature (well, I guess there is, but you have to pay extra for it), and trying to get anyone on the phone at H&R Block that understands my problem is a lost cause. All the lady at H&R on the phone did was ask me if I want a replacement card. Could the card be damaged somehow? The magnetic strip looks fine and the card isn't damaged that I can visibly see.

Anyways, enough yammering, onto my story that hopefully someone reading can help me with:

Two days ago, at a Dollar General, I loaded $400.00 onto my Emerald Card, along with a $1.95 fee. I looked online at my account at the H&R Block site, thought cool, there's money there on my card now. The following day I go to a store to slide the card, and it's declined. I go onto the website and even call the number on the back of the  card, and both affirm the $400.00 is there, so why is it being declined? I already activated the card and created a pin and I am using the correct pin at the cashier.

Re: Emerald Card declined

Hello and welcome to the community.

There are several possible reasons for the card being declined even though there is money available. The first, and easiest to check would be an equipment malfunction at the store. I would suggest that you try the card at another store and see if that works. The card could also be bad, if that is the case call the number on the back of the card and simply request a replacement card.

Hope this helps you.

Re: Emerald Card declined

I figured it out! I had to activate my card online. I had already activated it by phone, which you would think would be the reason I'd be able to choose a pin, but yeah, just tried activating it online and making a purchase and it went through. I assume now, well more so in the realm of hope, that the card itself isn't damaged and I can use it to purchase goods and services at stores. There you have it. No need to get on the phone with some pesky tech support person and/or wait for in the mail, a new card.
