Paying college tuition, why doesn't tuition cost/credit carry over to the 1040?

[ Edited ]

I have a child in college and am paying college tuition. Using H&R Block software I have completed the questionnaire including the information that feeds into form 8917 (tuition and fees deduction), but nothing appears on line 34 of the 1040.

Tuition and fees is on a different form than the American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit. I'd review the data entry to see if you checked that you want Tuition and fees. While most of the calculations for education expenses are the same, the software will output onto line 49 of the 1040 if you used American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.

If you've chosen correctly and the tuition and fees still doesn't flow to line 34, I'd contact technical support.
