nonresident spouse residency

My husband is a non US resident. not live in US, no SSN. I would like to file married separately. H&R block online ask to choose a state my husband live in on Dec 31 2017 but there's no option for foreign address. Now I cannot proceed to next step unless I pick one state in US for my husband.

Re: nonresident spouse residency

Hello a214366952,

Welcome to H&R Block Community.

In the H&R Block online program, on the screen that asks about which state the spouse lived in as of Dec 31, 2017, scroll down to the very bottom of the dropdown list and find the option for "Foreign Country." Select the Foreign Country option, click the Next button, and you should be able to proceed with the rest of the tax program.

If you have any other questions, I'll be glad to help.

Re: nonresident spouse residency

Hello blaguesma,

Welcome to H&R Block Community.

In regards to placing the NRA (nonresident alien) code on the married filing separate return, after you select the "married filing separate" filing status and filled out the personal information screen about yourself, on the personal information screen about the spouse called "Tell us about your spouse," leave the Social Security Number (SSN) box blank and hit Next. Then, you should see the next screen called "We need your spouse's SSN."  On this screen, you select the option for "Spouse isn't a U.S. citizen".  Hit Next a few times and that should allow you to generate the tax return in showing "NRA" in the SSN box for the nonresident alien spouse.
