There has to be a bug in HRB DIY 2016 Deluxe online product for 1040 return for Line 32. I'm pretty sure that elective deferrals to a 401 (k) or 403 (b) plan cannot be used to calculate the IRA deduction because the contributions are pre-taxed and are not included as income in box 1 on W2 - but are listed in box 12a.
That being said the product referenced above is using these $$ for Line 32 and it is giving me an additional refund of $240. I do not believe that this is correct and I have tried to resolve it numerous times via "Chats" (15174532, CHAT-1521405, CHAT-15304138, and ) and I keep getting the run around and the instructions that I was given to CHAT with an ATA, I could only follow through steps 1- 4. At step 5 what I find does not match I was told I'd find.
Please help!! Thank you.

That's odd. My 401(k) contributions didn't do that. Are you certain that you didn't accidentally enter your elective deferrals as Traditional IRA contributions?

katja -97, You are right. I entered my 401k incorrectly in the IRA section. Dumb mistake, and I was excited to have the extra $324 on my refund. Wife corrected me very quickly and made me take it out of the IRA section as a 401k is not the same as a Traditional IRA. There went my refund.
