I made the call. After a half hour on the phone the "solution" was to go ahead and complete the tax return and then hope the activation error resolves itself by the time I try to e-file.
I'm not finding this to be a particularly satisfying solution.

If this is a prior year tax return, you don't need the activation code, you can skip that page. Reason; you can't e-file a prior year return, it has to be printed and mailed to the IRS and State DOR.
If it is a current year software, and the activation code isn't working please call 1-800-HRBLOCK. We will be able to give you another activation code.

I tried calling and getting a new activation code.
That didn't work.
Then the service rep suggested reinstalling from a new installer (with another new activation code). She said I'd need to uninstall the existing version first.
That didn't work either.
I noticed when I reinstalled after having "completely" uninstalled...information from the previous install still appeared in the Activation screen. I found that there were directories that the uninstall routine didn't remove. They were ...
There was a reg.xml file in the Roaming subdirectory that apparently had an encrypted version of the Activation fields.
I uninstalled, deleted both of those directories, and reinstalled again.
Even that didn't work.
So...I don't yet know what fixes this. But I do know a lot of things that don't.

ok so i was told that since my return has been pre selected before the irs opened that i would receive my refund sooner?.... it was a over the rep from hr block i spoke with just wandering if this sounds familiar? please let me anything if you can the internet has so many different answers right now esp this time of the year geez so I chose to come here Thanks for your time have a great evening

I purchased this software and can't activate. Getting frustrating. I changed proxy settings didn't work, changed it back to default. Checked firewall, no problem letting H&R software through. My clock and date are fine. Seems to be a common problem with no common solution. I can't get hold of a person at the phone number. The computer that answers says I can talk to it like a normal person, but it can't answer my question.
