CA State issue with incomplete W-2

Hi,

I get the following message in the Accuracy Review Results:

California State Issues

CA - Your state and local information is incomplete on 1 or more of your W-2s.  Make sure Boxes 15-17 are complete and remove any locality information if Boxes 18 and 19 are blank or 0.

Boxes 15-17 are complete, Boxes 18, 19 and 20 are blank.

Can anyone help figure out why this isn't being accepted?

Hi arnair73,

Welcome to the H&R Block community.

If you have the name of a locality entered on your W-2 then you have to enter you local wages (wages earned within that locality) and any withholdings you have for that locality as well.  The software will not accept blanks or zeroes if you have the name of a school district or county or other identifying information for a locality entered.

This could be coming from your general information or from your W-2 on the federal return.  You're positive there is no locality information on the W-2 in the software right?  Especially in Box 20?  What city do you live in?  If you live in a locality that imposes an income tax then boxes 18, 19, and 20 must be completed.

The other possibilities here are that you mis-checked something in the interview or that the software isn't working correctly.  But let's see if we can figure this out first.

Hi, I just figured it out.   I had added CA SUI in the section above and after removing that entry the error is gone.

Here's how I have it now:

Box 14: CASDI (with $ amount)

Box 18-20: blank

In my W-2, boxes 18-20 are blank.

But it gives me the error. Could you help?

 Thank you for reaching out to us. Below is some steps you can take to fix the issue.

Knowledge Centre

1. Click the Federal tab at the top of the screen.
2. Select Go to the beginning of my return.
3. Click Next.
4. Click Income under the Federal Tab.
5. If applicable, click Yes to the question Do you need to tell us about any additional income?
6. Click Add next to Employment, 1099-G and Freelance / Contract Income.
7. Click Visit Topic next to W-2 Wages, salaries, and tips.
8. Click Edit beside the W-2 the caused the error. If it is not listed, click Add New W-2 instead.
9. Click Next to the page titled Tell us about this W-2, enter any requested information if necessary.
10. Scroll down to boxes 15-20.
    • If the W-2 DOES NOT have information in boxes 16-20, leave ALL of the boxes (including box 15 - DO NOT ENTER CA or any other postal code in box 15 unless there is information in boxes 16-20!) blank.
    • If the W-2 DOES have information in boxes 16-20:
      • Fill out all of the boxes 15-20.
      • For California residents, Box 20 should be filled with CASDI (even if only CA or anything with CA in it is listed).

What if my W-2 has information for boxes 15-16-17, but NO information for boxes 18-19-20?

I have information only in 15 and 16; 17-20 is blank

I have information for boxes 15-17 on my W2.

Boxes 18-20 are blank. It continues to tell me there is an error when I resubmit.

Good Morning Everyone.

Here are the steps again to remove this error message. If you still continue to have issues, please let us know.

1. Click the Federal tab at the top of the screen.
2. Select the option labeled Go to the beginning of my return.
3. Click Next.
4. Click Income.
5. Click Yes.
6. Click Add+ next to Employment, 1099-G and Freelance/Contract Income.
7. Click Visit Topic next to W-2 Wages, salaries and tips.
8. Click Edit beside the W-2.
9. Boxes 18-20 should not be filled out with 0s. These boxes should only be filled out if the clients W-2 has information other than 0. Make corrections to these fields as needed.
10. Click Next to the page Great job! Your W-2 is complete!.
11. Repeat steps 8 - 10 for each W-2.
